The Beginning (1993)

On August 16, 1993, Ian Murdock, a 23-year-old computer science student at Florida International University, posted a message to the comp.os.linux.announce newsgroup. The message was titled "Debian GNU/Linux — a community effort to create a free Linux distribution."

At the time, Linux was a young kernel, and distributions were either commercial or informal collections. Ian envisioned something different: a distribution built entirely by a community of volunteers, governed by principles of free software, with no single company in control.

The name "Debian" came from a combination of "Debra" (his then-girlfriend, now wife) and "Ian." The Debian logo — a diamond shape divided into seven segments — represents the seven principles of the Debian Social Contract.

Project Founded

February 2007

Debian 5.0 — Lenny

Featured 25,800 packages and became the most popular Debian release for servers. Known for its incredible stability. The release was delayed multiple times to ensure quality, earning Debian a reputation for never rushing releases.

February 2009

Debian 6.0 — Squeeze

30,000+ packages, improved 3D graphics support, and the introduction of the Debian Live project as an official effort. Featured the Linux 2.6.32 kernel and became the basis for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

February 2011

Debian 7.0 — Wheezy

Introduced systemd (with sysvinit as default), Wayland support, and the Debian Multiarch system allowing multiple architectures on one system. Featured 36,268 packages.

May 2013

Debian 8.0 — Jessie

systemd became the default init system. Featured 45,058 packages, improved security with full RELRO and stack protector, and the introduction of the Debian Security Tracker. Known for exceptional stability.
